Is Facebook Turning Us Into Psychotics?
- Who takes a photo of every meal they eat to show to everyone they meet?
- Who offers up their newborn babies to strangers they’ve never met?
- Who drags their cats and their dogs around with them everywhere they go?
Well, a person afflicted with psychosis (a psychotic) certainly does…
And, thanks to Facebook, so do you….
In fact, thanks to the wonderful world of social media and networking sites, (the primary culprit being the omnipresent social gorilla known as Facebook), we’re only paying attention to the things we want to pay attention to. And that leaves us increasingly disconnected from our friends, family and co-workers as we simply turn to our devices when a conversation no longer interests us.
And that, apparently can be the cause of psychosis which, according to the American Heritage Science dictionary, is “a mental state characterized by the loss of contact with reality and the ability to think rationally.”
This mental state (a psychotic person often behaves inappropriately and is incapable of normal social functioning) has been attributed to frequent Facebook usage.
Case in point. Dr. Larry Rosen, a professor of psychology at California State University, distributed surveys to 1,000 urban adolescents and his own 15-minute observations of 300 teenagers that were studying.
Among his findings were;
- Teenagers who use Facebook more often show narcissistic tendencies while young adults who have a strong Facebook presence show more signs of other psychological disorders, including antisocial behaviors, mania, and aggressive tendencies.
- Daily overuse of media and technology has a negative effect on the health of all children, preteens, and teenagers by making them more prone to anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders, as well as by making them more susceptible to future health problems.
- Facebook can be distracting and can negatively impact learning. Studies found that middle school, high school, and college students who checked Facebook at least once during a 15-minute study period achieved lower grades.
There’s certainly plenty of data that supports Dr. Rosen’s findings. Surveys showing that we’re increasingly suffering from a variety of psychiatric ilnesses directly linked to the use and over-use of social media have become commonplace.
So, what’s to be done about it? Well, obviously it’s long overdue for us to actively pursue a more self-aware and well-adjusted relationship with technology, the internet and social media.
Or, you could just go on adding more photos to your collection of idiotic cat pictures on Facebook…
Nickles and Dimes - Arizona State University’s 2012-2013 Tuition Proposal.
On February 24, 2012, Arizona State University presented its tuition proposal for the 2012-2013 academic year to the Arizona Board of Regents. The ASU proposal does not include a possible (and likely) increase in costs for housing, meals and a variety of other potential student costs and fees.
With all of the “Nickle and Diming” of it’s over 70,000 students for everything from books to meals to parking to football tickets to housing…etc, etc… Arizona State University hardly needs an increase of it’s tuition by a single penny…
This year’s ASU in-state freshmen are playing $9,208 for tuition a year. Tuition and fees — depending on their academic colleges — bring their totals close to $10,000 annually. During the 2010-2011 academic year, ASU’s resident freshmen paid $7,800 in tuition. Arizona State University has been receiving growing pressure from parents, students and lawmakers to halt the steep tuition hikes that have occurred in the past few years. Since 2007, tuition and fees have gone up 96 percent at ASU.
The sharpest increases occurred over the past three years and coincided with significant cuts in state funding because of Arizona’s economic crisis. The university system lost $428 million in state funding since 2008 even as enrollment grew, meaning per-student funding fell by about 50 percent. Last year, the Arizona Board Of Regents voted to hike tuition 20 percent at ASU.
Universities are feeling increased pressure at the state and national level to make higher education more affordable. Last month, President Barack Obama called for changes to the higher-education financial-aid system and warned colleges and universities that they could lose federal funds if they fail to control spiraling tuition costs.
Obama said he was “putting colleges on notice” that skyrocketing tuition hikes have to end.
“You can’t assume that you’ll just jack up tuition every single year. If you can’t stop tuition from going up, then the funding you get from taxpayers each year will go down,” Obama said in a speech at the University of Michigan.

Who Is Santa Claus?
Furthermore, one that same night, he breaks into every household which beleives in him. He uses the “Enter through the chimney technique”. However, rather than steal anything of value, he steals the food left out. Such gluttony!
The cleverly wrapped presents usually contain some useless object the child of the house yearns for. However, one must assume, knowing his other criminal activity, that eventually he will deliver a bomb to some household.
Lastly, he symbolizes that it is okay to be bad. No matter how naughty a child has been that year, Santa always seems to reward him/her with a present.
This year, I will catch this fiend by installing a crossbar in my chimney. If any weight should be applied to the bar, it will cause a spark, which will start a fire in the fireplace.
We must bring Santa to justice!
